What Is the Best Paper for Printmaking and Why Does It Matter?

The best paper for printmaking absorbs ink evenly, holds fine detail and survives pressure without tearing. Choosing the right printmaking paper affects the sharpness, depth and longevity of each print you pull.

Weight and absorbency are the key factors. Heavier, softer sheets take relief and intaglio inks well, because they give under pressure and pick up detail from the block or plate. Thin, hard-sized paper can resist ink and leave patchy results. Keep a few offcuts of your chosen paper to test ink and pressure before printing the final edition.

Surface changes the result too. A smooth sheet suits fine linework, such as etching and detailed lino cuts, while a lightly textured surface adds character to bold, graphic prints.

Should paper be dampened? For many intaglio techniques, yes. Slightly damp paper is softer and pushes into the lines of the plate to lift the ink. Relief printing with water-based inks can work on dry paper, so check what your chosen method needs.

Acid-free, cotton-rich sheets are worth considering for editions you want to keep, as they resist yellowing over time. For practice proofs, a more economical sheet such as multi-purpose art paper is perfectly sensible.
