What we were actually trying to solve

Wood wool vs plain foam — what the comparison actually showed
Foam panels win on one thing: they are straightforward to source and install quickly. That is a real advantage if you need something fast and the environment is controlled. For almost everything else relevant to a gym, the comparison goes the other way.
Durability:
Standard acoustic foam is polyurethane — it compresses under impact and does not return to its original form. It also degrades with UV exposure and in high-humidity environments, becoming brittle and crumbly over time. In a gym that runs twelve hours a day with air conditioning cycling on and off, foam panels on the walls rarely survive more than two or three years looking acceptable.
Wood wool is a cement-bonded material — wood fibres compressed with cement binder into rigid panels. It does not compress under impact, it does not degrade with humidity, and it does not crumble. Acoustic performance:
Foam absorbs sound across a relatively narrow frequency range, and that range is typically mid-to-high. It handles voices and higher-frequency noise reasonably well but does almost nothing for low-frequency content — bass from speakers, impact from heavy weights dropping, low-end machine noise.
Wood wool has a broader absorption profile that extends further into lower frequencies. In a gym where the noise environment includes bass-heavy music and significant low-frequency impact, that range matters. The difference in how the main floor sounds now versus before installation is noticeable in exactly the frequency range where foam would not have helped.
Appearance over time:
Foam panels yellow, compress, and show marks. There is no cleaning them properly. Wood wool panels can be wiped down, hold their texture and colour, and look the same at month eighteen as they did at install. For a gym that puts effort into its visual environment, that longevity matters.
What the installation delivered
Panels went up across three zones — the main floor perimeter at height, the spin studio on three walls, and full coverage in the HIIT room. Installation took four days.
The changes members noticed without being prompted:
- The spin studio is the most commented-on change. Instructor cues are now clear at normal speaking volume during a full class with music running. Before treatment, instructors were raising their voices for the entire session.
- Peak-hour noise on the main floor is noticeably lower without feeling quiet. The energy is still there — the harsh accumulated echo is not.
- The HIIT room handles impact noise from jumping and dropping movements significantly better. Members in adjacent zones no longer feel every box jump through the ceiling.
- Eighteen months on, not a single panel has been replaced. In three previous gym fit-outs I have been involved in, foam panels needed partial replacement within the first year.
